Orthopaedic oncology and bioengineering – podcast with A/Prof Claudia Di Bella

A/Prof Claudia Di Bella was recently interviewed for the Orthopod, a podcast held by the University of Melbourne’s Student Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Association, or SOMA.

In the podcast, hosted by medical student Liam Canavan, A/Prof Di Bella discusses her background as a former professional water polo player, and reflects on how the team work skills developed from this sport have shaped her experiences as a surgeon, emphasising that surgery is a discipline which requires great team work, with many different health professionals all working together to achieve the best outcomes for their patients.

Currently, A/Prof Di Bella is the team leader of the cartilage regeneration program at the University of Melbourne, which uses bio fabrication, or a combination of patient stem cells and other materials such as hydrogel, to repair or regenerate cartilage tissue. Claudia has a strong focus on repairing articular cartilage in young individuals or athletes who have experienced injury, to help prevent the development of arthritis in later life, and also wants to reduce the need for joint replacements of older adults.
